Fire doors across the country failing fire safety tests

Following safety investigations in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster, fire doors made by five different suppliers have been withdrawn from the market. The recent government investigations have taken place following news that front doors used in Grenfell Tower only resisted flames for 15 minutes instead of the 30 minutes expected.

Glazed and unglazed doors supplied by Manse Masterdor and Masterdor Ltd and glazed composite doors supplied by Specialist Building Products Ltd (trading as Permadoor), Solar Windows Ltd and Birtley Group Ltd (trading as Bowater by Birtley) have all failed recent tests at the Building Research Establishment. The doors were expected to withstand fire for 30 minutes but some failed in just 19 minutes.

Following the results of the investigations, Communities Secretary James Brokenshire has requested for the fire door suppliers to urgently meet to plan how they will rectify the problem and to ensure no fire doors fail safety standards going forward. They will also need a plan of action for the hundreds of thousands of fire doors across the country that will need to be replaced.
